First elected to statewide office in 1998, and then re-elected in 2002 and 2006, Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz is the chief elections official and business registrar for the State of Connecticut. Throughout her career in public service, Bysiewicz has consistently stood up for Connecticut consumers, worked to safeguard personal, medical and financial information, fought to protect and preserve the environment, and led legislative efforts to ensure integrity and ethics in government. In January of 2010, Bysiewicz announced her candidacy for Attorney General.

A graduate of Yale College and Duke University School of Law, she is admitted to practice in both New York and Connecticut and has practiced corporate and international law at the law firm of White & Case in New York City, as well as corporate and banking law at Robinson & Cole in Hartford. In addition, Bysiewicz has practiced pension and health care law in the law department of the Aetna Insurance Company.

From 1993 to 1999, Bysiewicz represented the 100th Assembly District in the State House of Representatives. She also served as House Chair of the Government Administration and Elections Committee and as a member of the Judiciary Committee.

For the past eleven years, Bysiewicz has managed a large state agency that has generated more than 250 million dollars for the state's general fund and that advises the public about compliance with state election and business laws. She regularly advocates for changes in business, election and other public interest laws before the general assembly.

A native of Middletown, Bysiewicz continues to reside there with her husband David Donaldson and their three children. She is the author of the book Ella: A Biography of Governor Ella Grasso, which she wrote and published while she was in law school. Secretary Bysiewicz is also the granddaughter of Polish and Greek immigrants, and the first Polish-American and Greek-American to be elected to statewide constitutional office in Connecticut.
